12 step recovery is the most widely used treatment model and can be applied to any addictive behavior . It all started with Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) founded in 1935 by Bill Wilson and Dr Bob Smith. These men found that people who had experienced a “spiritual awakening ” were able to stop drinking. They outlined a program that consisted of 12 steps which if followed correctly promised a spiritual awakening. The Twelve Steps were first published in the book, Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism in 1939. The method was then adapted and became the foundation of other twelve-step programs such as Narcotics Anonymous, Cocaine Anonymous, Over-eaters Anonymous, Co-Dependents Anonymous,Sex Addicts Anonymous,Gamblers Anonymous and Debtors Anonymous.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy ( CBT )
CBT is an effective tool for the treatment of a variety of problems, including substance abuse, anxiety, personality, eating, and other disorders. The particular therapeutic techniques vary within the different approaches of CBT according to the particular kind of problem issues, but commonly may include keeping a diary of significant events and associated feelings, thoughts and behaviors; questioning and testing cognitions, assumptions, evaluations and beliefs that might be unhelpful and unrealistic; gradually facing activities which may have been avoided; and trying out new ways of behaving and reacting. Relaxation, mindfulness and distraction techniques are also commonly included.Going through cognitive behavioral therapy generally is not an overnight process for clients. Even after clients have learned to recognize when and where their mental processes go awry, it can in some cases take considerable time or effort to replace a dysfunctional cognitive-affective-behavioral process or habit with a more reasonable and adaptive one.
Social Educational Model of Therapy
The Social Education Model sees addiction as a learned behavior stemming from cognitive processes, modeling influences and behavioral as well as genetic influences. Although, not all proponents of this model agree wholeheartedly, a cohesive philosophy retains that addiction is maintained by precursory causes (classical conditioning or expectancies) and further reinforcement of that behavior through operant conditioning (“I do A-action and get B-effect, B-effect reduces stressors, therefore A-action reduces stressors”).
Unlike aversive conditioning and some earlier models related to the Social Education Model, the Social Education theorists extend their thinking to place an emphasis on human-environment interactions as key to shaping addictive behaviors. They stress, in particular, socialization processes, imitation of observable behavior, as well as the influence of modeling (role models) in both the forming of an addictive behavior, but also in the successful treatment thereof.
Educational Therapies
Educational therapies usually involve the building of general life skills. Clients learn how to handle stressful situations that might ordinarily cause a relapse back into addiction. Topics covered can vary but often include communication ,study, financial management ,job seeking and advancement ,self control, coping skills and self-esteem.Often relapse prevention techniques are stressed including disconnecting from fellow addicts and re-connecting or surrounding oneself with non-addictive friends who are succeeding in life. As the individual becomes more able to handle the general ups and downs in life they become more secure in their recovery.
Faith Based Recovery
Faith Based programs usually employ the 12 step approach to recovery but tailor it to their particular faith. Those who place high importance on spirituality often want those beliefs integrated into the program. Celebrate Recovery is the most popular Christian program in the USA today. The workshops are in many Rehab Centers and Churches throughout the country. The Native American track of treatment is White Bison and is commonly referred to as the Indigenous Track. The program addresses the past traumas and present challenges of Native Americans and focuses on helping recovering addicts find their way back to “Mino Mikana,” the Good Path. Catholic and Jewish Rehab Centers also incorporate their particular faith into traditional 12 step recovery.
Holistic Rehab
Most Holistic centers revolve around the philosophy of healing Body, Mind and Spirit . This approach would address the Bio-Physical aspect of addiction and most likely include a detox program that utilizes spa , whirlpool or steam and saunas to help flush toxins, heavy metals and drug residue out of the body. Addictions deplete critical neurotransmitters and a proper formula of vitamins, minerals and amino acids are included in this track of treatment Emphasis is placed on nutrition as this is critical to rebuild the body and the mind. Most Holistic programs offer a workout gym, yoga, martial arts or some healthy form of exercise.
Holistic Drug Rehabs also can provide :
- Reiki Energy and Healing
- Yoga
- Lectures by recovering addicts, and counselors
- Guided imagery and meditation sessions
- The philosophy and spirituality of Martial Arts in terms of Recovery
Coupled with the intensive Inventory and Self-Discovery piece of the Holistic Drug Rehab program, a client can uncover, discover and discard those things in their life which are blocking them off from recovering from their addictions. Removing years of guilt, shame and remorse can reveal the person that they truly are and allow them to continue their life , clean and sober…a truly empowered person.
